The world of clarinet mouthpieces doesn’t provide many options for bass clarinetists, outside of the traditional mouthpieces designed for classical playing. And the non-traditional mouthpieces out there can prove to be very uncomfortable or counter-intuitive.
Considering that he finds himself in a Jazz Big Band or Brass Band setting more frequently than a Symphonic Orchestra, Eric asked SYOS to help him design a mouthpiece to could go above and beyond. The result: a versatile mouthpiece that acknowledges the tradition of bass clarinet mouthpieces, with an expanded dynamic range that does not compromise comfortability.
Here is a little of what Eric has to say about the mouthpiece:
“My signature bass clarinet mouthpiece goes hand-in-hand with my universal approach to music, which is centered on the balance of comfortability and adaptability. I don’t have to push as hard on particular notes to make them sound clearer, and high notes seem to fall out of the horn effortlessly. I can comfortably play without losing control of the instrument or physically exhausting myself. I redirect the effort to fuel my adaptability (creativity and/or imagination).”
